England stun Australia to win their maiden CWG Gold in Women’s Hockey

BIRMINGHAM: The England women’s hockey team produced a stunning result in their gold medal fight with favorites Australia and claimed their first Commonwealth Games gold.

England, who had met Australia three times in the Commonwealth Games final since 1998 and lost all three, turned history on its head when the home team dealt the heavy favorites a stunning 2-1 defeat.

The English team had won a medal at every Commonwealth Games since hockey was added to the program in 1998, but never gold.

On Sunday, however, the home team finally clinches their first gold at the Games.

In a predictably tense and nervous encounter between the two teams, despite a late Hockeyroos consolidation, goals from Holly Hunter and Tess Howard were enough to give England their first gold medal.

The Indian women’s hockey team, meanwhile, thrashed New Zealand 2-1 on penalties before the match ended in a 1-1 draw for both teams.
