What Is An NBA Warning Card? Why Are NBA Fans Being Flagged By Officals?
What are NBA Warning Cards and why is the league giving them out to fans during the 2022-23 NBA season?
The NBA is knee-deep in preseason action starting October 7the, 2022 and fans begin to test a rule that is being implemented throughout the league. A fan in preseason recently posted a photo of a card handed to him by an official labeled ‘NBA warning card.’
The fan with the name ‘DJ Scheme’ would say in the tweet, “A guy gave me my first official NBA warning. GOOFY. He said I said the F word.” he would still fool the man who handed him the card.

This has prompted the NBA Twitter to ponder what caused fans to be given this card and what constitutes something disturbing enough for them to be given this card.

NBA warning cards and what is their purpose.
The text on the NBA warning card displayed says that the person receiving the warning directed verbal abuse at players, staff, coaches, or referees. He/she was being a nuisance or a huge distraction. The league also states that if they repeat the offense, they would be kicked out of the arena with no refund.
NBA warning cards aren’t really a new thing. In 2013, the league began issuing them to fans sitting in courtside seats in the form of a red card. However, over the years the practice lost steam and fans were allowed to be as raucous as they could until they were suddenly kicked out of the arena.
There hasn’t been a proper system for fans to know what constitutes behavior worthy of getting kicked out of an arena. Now that exists.
What is the NBA Fan Code of Conduct?
Technically, the NBA shouldn’t have to issue NBA warning cards given that its website clearly lays out a full set of rules that fans must follow when in the arena. The rules are incredibly easy to follow too.
Everything from not directing hate speech towards players or anyone else on or off the field to not getting into fights or being overly intoxicated, fans of all 30 teams need to keep this in mind. Here is a link to the Official NBA Fan Code of Conduct.
