“LeBron James by Far a Better All-Rounder than Michael Jordan”: Gary Payton Drops Truth Bomb
NBA veteran Gary Payton puts LeBron James ahead of Michael Jordan as an all-around player.
The Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James will live on forever, with social media, TV talk shows and podcasts continuing to feed on his audience, finding new angles on this everlasting barbershop conversation. However, it is always interesting to get a partner’s perspective, especially those who witnessed the game of the two previous stalwarts.
One such player is Gary Payton, who had the opportunity to witness the greatness of His Airness and King James firsthand. The Glove had some of their most iconic battles against Jordan and the Bulls, most notably the 1996 NBA Finals.
“[I tried] to stop it because you couldn’t stop it.”

After winning the DPOY and leading the league in steals, Payton surprised everyone with his performances in games four, five and six, putting the clamps on MJ. While Jordan’s Last Dance may paint a different picture, the stats don’t lie.
Shawn Kemp says that Michael Jordan laughing and ignoring Gary Payton’s defense in the 1996 NBA Finals in ‘The Last Dance’ is “a joke”. 😳

Payton played his last game in 2007, at a time when the league was watching a kid from Akron make history. Although the former Supersonics guard was at the end of his career, he got to see James play firsthand.

However, Payton doesn’t hesitate to put James ahead of Jordan when debating who is the best in all aspects.
Gary Payton explains why LeBron James is a better player in every way than Michael Jordan.
While one faction uses MJ’s titles and MVPs to make their case, the other uses LBJ’s individual records. When Payton was asked the million dollar question, the Hall of Famer had the following response.

The Glove had the Lakers superstar ahead of Jordan in assists and dribbling, something stat gurus will second, given that James has a 7.4 APG for his career compared to Jordan’s 5.3 APG. Speaking of scoring, Payton gave the lead to his Chicago nemesis, who at 30.1 is the all-time PPG leader.
While many might think that Payton giving James the edge may be due to a personal bias against MJ, the nine-time All-Star has the backing of the stat gurus.
