Cristiano Ronaldo retired from international football on 5 November 2026 with 234 caps and 146 goals for Portugal — both men’s world records — and 985 career goals for club and country, 15 short of 1,000. This is the full account of what he achieved in 23 years at the top: the goals by club, the trophies, the Ballon d’Or awards, and the records that may stand for decades.

Portugal records

Ronaldo’s Portugal career ran from August 2003 to September 2026, and he leaves as the most-capped man and the highest scorer in men’s international football. His 146 goals came with 45 assists in 234 appearances. Before he debuted, Portugal had never won a major trophy. He captained the team to its first at Euro 2016, then added Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

He was the first man to score at six World Cups, from 2006 to 2026, and his 11 World Cup goals are a Portugal record, passing Eusébio’s nine. At the European Championship he holds the records for most goals, 14, and most appearances, 30, across six tournaments. He scored for Portugal in 23 consecutive calendar years, from 2004 to 2026, and was the first man to reach 200 international caps, against Iceland in June 2023. His 10 international hat-tricks are also a men’s record.

Portugal qualified for every World Cup and every Euro on his watch. Before him, the country had reached only three World Cups and three Euros in its history. His best World Cup finish was fourth place in 2006, his tournament debut, and Portugal were runners-up at Euro 2004 on home soil in his first major tournament.

Al-Nassr accounts for 138 of the total, in 160 games. A hat-trick against Al Kholood on 29 October 2026, in a 5-3 win, took him to 985. He has seven goals in 10 league games this season, and his contract in Saudi Arabia runs to June 2027, so the road to 1,000 runs through Riyadh.

Real Madrid years

Madrid was the peak. Ronaldo scored 450 goals in 438 games for Real Madrid between 2009 and 2018, more goals than games, and left as the club’s all-time top scorer. He won four Champions League titles in five seasons — 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 — and finished as the competition’s all-time top scorer with 140 goals. His 17 goals in the 2013-14 Champions League remain the most in a single season, and he finished as the competition’s top scorer seven times.

Four of his five Ballon d’Or awards came at Madrid, in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017. He also won two La Liga titles, in 2012 and 2017, and two Copa del Rey trophies with the club.

Manchester United and Juventus

Ronaldo first became the best player in the world at Manchester United. Between 2003 and 2009 he won three straight Premier League titles, from 2007 to 2009, an FA Cup, two League Cups, the 2008 Champions League and the Club World Cup. In 2007-08 he scored 42 goals in a season and won his first Ballon d’Or that December. He finished his United career, across two spells, with 145 goals in 346 appearances.

At Juventus, from 2018 to 2021, he won two Serie A titles, in 2019 and 2020, and became the first player to win league titles in England, Spain and Italy. He scored 101 goals for the Italian club.

Trophies and Ballon d’Or

Across his career Ronaldo has won 35 senior trophies with his clubs and Portugal. His five Ballon d’Or awards came in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017, the most for a European player. He has also won the European Golden Shoe four times.

In August 2025 he became the first player to score 100 competitive goals for four different clubs, reaching the mark with a penalty for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Super Cup final against Al-Ahli in Hong Kong. He has scored more than 60 career hat-tricks. In Saudi Arabia he set the Pro League record with 35 goals in the 2023-24 season.

Road to 1000 goals

Fifteen goals stand between Ronaldo and 1,000. No man has ever reached the mark in official senior football, and at 41 he is still scoring at better than a goal every two games for Al-Nassr. The 15-minute hat-trick against Al Kholood showed the chase is still alive, and with a contract to June 2027 he has time on his side, even if the pace of the last two seasons is what it will take.

One missing honour

One prize never came. Ronaldo played at six World Cups and never won one. His best finish was fourth place in 2006. In 2026, his final tournament, Portugal lost to Spain in the round of 16, and his only knockout-stage goal at the tournament was a penalty against Croatia. It is the one gap in a career that has everything else — the goals, the trophies, the individual awards, and the records.
