Anderson, Broad dismantle South Africa for 151 on first day of second Test

MANCHESTER: England’s magical rhythm duo of James Anderson and Stuart Broad stormed the South African batting line to restrict the tour squad to 151 on the opening day of the second Test, here at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Anderson shone in his historic 100th Test appearance at home when he grabbed three wickets alongside Broad, who also grabbed three to shorten the Proteas’ innings after they opted to bat first.

Jonny Bairstow and Zak Crawley, on the other hand, bolstered their team’s position by picking up an undefeated 68-run partnership, after initial hits by kagiso rabad, Lungi Ngidi Y Anrich Nortje, to help England are up 111/3 at the end of the first day’s game.

England got off to a dismal start when starter Alex Lees (4) was sent off early by Ngidi on a caught wicket after facing just seven balls. While Nortje took out Ollie Pope on 23 of 27 while looking for a touch.

England’s reliable mid-tier batsman Joe Root failed to impress as he was only able to manage 9 for 15 before he was eliminated by Rabada.

Earlier in the opening innings England’s ferociously paced attack tore through South Africa as they lost wickets at regular intervals with Rabadda leading the scorecard for his side as he played a gutsy 36-for-72 strike, laced with two bounds.

In addition to Rabadda, kyle verreyne he scored 21 of 49 and Keegan Petersen also went 21-for-29 amid South Africa’s disappointing day with the bat.

For England, in addition to Broad and Anderson, Ben Stokes took two wickets while ollie robinson and Jack Leach each did a scalp.

England will resume their innings on day two with the overnight pairing of Crawley and Bairstow with the respective score of 23 and 38.

It is pertinent to mention here that South Africa holds a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, having beaten England by one inning and 12 runs in the first Test at Lord’s.
