All-Star Broke Down the Massive Expenses of Viral Party
Gilbert Arenas recently sat down with former NBA star Nick Young on his show. Don’t relax Gil. As the duo cut it up, Young asked the former Wizards star about the details of his infamous 2007 party, which reportedly cost a million dollars.
Arenas would later reveal that the party actually cost him more, around million.
Next, the three-time All-Star would detail the various aspects of his 25th birthday party. Starting with finances, Agent Zero told his former Warriors teammate: “The money wasn’t really intended for the match itself. So I had to pay Diddy $2 million… I had to rent two Ritz-Carltons… I had American Express make black cards, and that’s how they invited you… I made Jet Blue flights at certain times private.”
Meanwhile, Nick Young made sure to tease Arenas about his financial dealings with Diddy. The rapper is currently under investigation for allegations of sex trafficking. Therefore, Young tried to jokingly imply that Gil was also involved in some shady business. However, Arenas insisted that their interactions were long before the rapper went “rogue.”
After giving an overview of the party’s finances, Arenas would reveal that most of the budget was spent on flights and hotel rentals. Having spent so much money on the party, one would imagine that Gil had the time of his life. But the truth couldn’t have been more different. Arenas would reveal that organizing large parties often requires a lot of running. With several celebrities on the guest list, Arenas barely had time for himself once he finished greeting everyone.
The party finally paid off for Arenas
Arenas may not have had fun at his party, but that was never the goal to begin with. The Wizards guard had organized the party as a “popularity” stunt, as he desperately wanted to make the All-Star team that winter. But it wasn’t just about making the All-Star team either, as Arenas was still in negotiations with Adidas for his sneaker deal.
Wanting more money from Adidas, Arenas would try to increase his influence during negotiations through the match. The match would allow Arenas to catch up to Vince Carter, who was leading the East guards in voting at the time. After the match, Arenas would quickly gain popularity, quickly gaining ground on Carter.
Come All-Star weekend, Agent Zero’s plans would prove successful, as Arenas would be named the starter for the 2007 NBA All-Star Game. Once he arrived at the All-Star Game, Adidas came calling. The German company would offer Arenas a more lucrative deal ($5 million a year for 8 years) and $40 million that summer. Arenas would happily accept the deal, proving that the All-Star Game was more about popularity than skill.
