Sindh Assembly approves Witness Protection Bill 2013
Karachi: Sindh Assembly (SA) on Wednesday approved The Sindh Witness Protection Bill 2013.
The bill was presented by provincial law minister Sikandar Mendhro.
Speaking in the assembly, Sikandar Mendhro said accused are acquitted on lack of evidence as witnesses are not provided protection, adding they are afraid to appear in the court.
Sikandar Mendhro said this legislation was to provide protection to the witnesses, adding that giving safety to them will help bring peace in the society besides bringing culprits to justice.
He said that witnesses in criminal proceedings, due to fear for their lives do not come forward to give the evidence against accused persons.
After the commencement of this act, government would establish a “Witness Protection Programme” for protection and safety of a witness in any proceedings relating to this act.
