A medical team from Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) visited Adiala Jail on Sunday evening and examined former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, sources told ARY News.

The team, led by Dr Arif, spent around two hours inside the prison. Doctors checked blood pressure, body temperature and pulse, carried out a general examination, and asked Imran Khan several questions about his health. Staff from the jail hospital helped the team during the visit.

Doctors also looked at the medicines Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were taking and gave fresh instructions about their care. Once the check-up ended, the team left the jail and both were moved back to their cells.

The visit came only days after PTI raised fresh alarm about Imran Khan’s health and asked for him to be moved to a hospital of the party’s choice.

Two-Hour Check-Up Inside Adiala Jail

The PIMS team reached Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi in the evening. Dr Arif led the team, and medical staff from the jail hospital worked with the doctors through the visit.

Doctors checked Imran Khan’s blood pressure, body temperature and pulse, and carried out a general physical examination. They asked him about his health in detail and went through the medicines he and Bushra Bibi were using.

Bushra Bibi was examined by the same team. The doctors issued instructions about medicines and health care for both of them before leaving the jail.

A second news outlet, 24NewsHD, reported the same details independently: the evening visit, the PIMS team led by Dr Arif, the checks carried out, and the return of both to their cells after the examination.

Why Health Worries Grew

Imran Khan has been in prison since August 2023. His health has become a regular point of dispute between his party and the government, and this week’s check-up sits in the middle of that dispute.

Last week, PTI said Imran Khan’s blood pressure had risen to 192. That figure came from the party, not from a hospital report, and it has not been independently verified. His sister Rubina Khan said he passed the concern to his lawyer after a meeting at Adiala Jail on 2 November. His lawyer, Barrister Salman Safdar, later said he was not the source of the alarming health reports.

PTI’s core committee met on Thursday and called the reports about the blood pressure reading “extremely alarming”. The committee urged Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi to make sure court orders about Imran Khan’s treatment are carried out. It asked the government to give his personal doctors immediate and full access to him, to arrange all needed medical tests without delay, and to shift him to Shifa International Hospital for a full check-up and treatment.

PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan repeated the demand on Friday. He said he had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking implementation of its 18 August order, which directed that Imran Khan be moved to a hospital for treatment and that a medical board be set up to look after his care.

The Supreme Court gave that order on 18 August, a day after the Adiala Jail superintendent sent the court a report on Imran Khan’s health. Instead of Shifa International Hospital, the government took him to PIMS, a state-run hospital, and then brought him back to prison.

Imran Khan also has an eye problem. Doctors found a blocked vein in his right eye in late January, and he has been taken to hospital several times since then.

Bushra Bibi has her own health case before the courts. Doctors who examined her found a mature cataract, and she has been told another eye operation will be needed around 15 November. Her first eye surgery took place on 18 April. On 7 November, she approached the Islamabad High Court seeking an eye specialist’s examination and permission to be treated by doctors of her choice at her own expense. Her lawyer told the court her eyesight was in an “extremely vulnerable condition” and that she could no longer bear sunlight or artificial light.

What Happens Next

The Islamabad High Court has fixed 10 November for appeals by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in the 190 million pound case. Bushra Bibi’s eye operation is expected around 15 November, if doctors go ahead on that date.

PTI’s parliamentary party has also linked the issue to politics. It decided to conditionally support the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment if Imran Khan is released. The party has formed a six-member steering committee, headed by Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Raja Nasir Abbas, to deal with access to Imran Khan and his medical treatment and to talk to the government.

No official medical report from the jail or PIMS about Sunday’s check-up has been made public so far. The next court hearing on 10 November is likely to bring the matter up again.
