Ramadan Moon Sighted in Pakistan, First Fast to Be Observed on Thursday Feb 19
ISLAMABAD: The wait is over. The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee has announced that the crescent moon for the holy month of Ramadan 1447 AH has been sighted in Pakistan. Consequently, the first day of fasting will be observed across the country tomorrow, Thursday, February 19, 2026.
The announcement was made by the Committee Chairman, Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, following a meeting of the central body held in Islamabad this evening.
Addressing a press conference, Maulana Azad confirmed that the committee had received credible testimonies of moon sightings from various parts of the country. Zonal committees in Lahore, Karachi, Quetta, and Peshawar also held simultaneous meetings to collect evidence.
“The atmosphere was clear in several regions, and verified reports were received confirming the sighting of the Ramadan crescent,” the Chairman stated. “Therefore, it is announced that the 1st of Ramadan 1447 Hijri will fall on Thursday, February 19.”
Preparations Begin
With the official announcement, the spiritual atmosphere across Pakistan has come alive. Mosques are being prepared for the first Taraweeh prayers, which will be offered tonight (Wednesday night). Citizens are also gearing up for their first Sehri early Thursday morning.
Global Context
Pakistan will begin the holy month one day after Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and other Gulf nations, who commenced fasting today, Wednesday, February 18. This difference is due to the natural variation in the lunar cycle and geographical locations. Pakistan joins several other Asian nations, including Indonesia and Malaysia, in observing the first fast on Thursday.
Government Directives
In light of the holy month, the State Bank of Pakistan and commercial banks will remain closed for public dealing tomorrow for the deduction of Zakat. The government has also issued revised office timings for the month to facilitate employees during fasting hours.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif* have issued messages congratulating the nation, urging citizens to remember the less fortunate and to pray for the peace and prosperity of Pakistan during this blessed month.
