Manzor Wasan blames IRSA for water scarcity in Sindh

KARACHI: Sindh Agriculture Adviser Manzoor Wasan stated on Sunday that the provincial government is gravely concerned about water shortages in the province.

Manzoor Wasan in his statement accused Punjab of stealing Sindh’s water with the help of IRSA. They want to turn Sindh into a desert by stopping their fair share of water, he added.

The Sindh adviser said the water shortage in the province has reached an alarming level of 53 percent.

He further said that the water level in Chamsha and Taunsa Barrages has dropped to 40,000 cusecs.

After agriculture and drinking water, there are now fears that the water supply to industries may be affected, he said, adding that due to acute water shortages, cotton and sugarcane crops have been damaged.

Wasan asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take note of the matter and ensure the supply of a due share of water to Sindh.

Earlier, Water Resources Minister Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah said that the country’s water situation will improve by June 30.

Addressing the floor of the National Assembly, Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah said that Sindh is facing severe water shortages and hopes the situation will improve by June 30. He said that the water shortage will also be shared with the provinces accordingly.

Shah said that we have to be united in this difficult situation as the country also faced the water crisis in 1951.
