Bumrah wreaks havoc on England as India seal clinical victory in first ODI

LONDON: Jasprit Bumrah broke into the top order as India defeated England by 10 wickets in the first One-Day International at the Oval on Tuesday.

Fast bowler Bumrah shone with a career best 6-19 as England were eliminated at 110 in just 25.2 overs after Indian captain Rohit Sharma put the hosts at bat first.

The Indian captain then starred with the bat and scored an unbeaten 76 runs, excellently combined by Shikhar Dhawan with 32 no-outs as the tourists chased the paltry goal in 18.4 overs.

England experienced one of the worst batting starts when Bumrah caused the hosts to collapse in their first match by eliminating Jason Roy and Joe Root in a duck.

Test pattern Ben Stokes did the same and looked for a golden duck in the next step of pacemaker Mohammed Shami.

England’s red ball hero Jonny Bairstow went down cheap in the 7th when Bumrah sent him back into the pavilion on a wicket caught from behind in the sixth over.

Liam Livingstone became the fourth batsman in the top six to go out with a duck when he was struck out by Bumrah in the eighth on reducing hosts to hosts to 26-5.

After the initial collapse, England’s lower order also failed to impress despite managing to avoid the embarrassing record-low team total ODI of 86 against Australia at Old Trafford in 2001.

England captain Jos Buttler remained his team’s top scorer with his 30 from 32 balls, tied with six caps.

For India, in addition to the sensational bowling figures produced by Bumrah, Shami took three wickets while young pacemaker Prasidh Krishna bagged one.

After the victory in the first game, India now holds a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series with the second match scheduled for Thursday at Lord’s.
