“You might write your name and whisper, “Call me,” or “See you in an hour”: Magic Johnson revealed his prolific s*x life leading up to HIV diagnosis

Legendary Los Angeles Lakers point guard Magic Johnson has blamed an extremely profligate lifestyle for a career-ending illness.

The Los Angeles Lakers weren’t always the kind of franchise they are today. In the ’60s and ’70s, the NBA wasn’t as well-liked and baseball reigned supreme.

The Yankees and the Red Sox were two of the greatest sports franchises. No NBA team could hope to compete with them in terms of popularity and success.

That was until the 1980s came along and the breed of flashy, cunning athletes who learned to make it not just competitive but entertaining.

The dawn of the Magic Johnson and Larry Bird era of basketball was a boon to the league. That’s when things really started to change for the NBA.

The two established their franchises, the Lakers and Celtics, among the biggest names in American sports. Their epic rivalry exists to this day as if Bird and Johnson lived on in their franchises, eternalized by their rivalry.

Magic Johnson revealed the lifestyle that led to his HIV diagnosis

Despite an exceptional career, Johnson’s retirement was not the best. After leading his team to the ’91 NBA Finals, a routine offseason checkup revealed the 6’9″ guard had contracted HIV.

He subsequently announced his retirement, but returned for another short-lived season at 95-96. Johnson described the days after his diagnosis as the lowest point of his life.

Media scrutiny and public outrage destroyed his self-confidence. He even contemplated ending it all. But Johnson stuck it out and dedicated his life to HIV/AIDS awareness.

In its autobiographyMagic chronicled in detail the events leading up to the tragic news.

He wrote: “Almost every time the bus took us back to our hotel after a game, there were 40 or 50 women waiting in the lobby to greet us. Most of them were beautiful, and some of them were just amazing.”

Johnson elaborated further: “Some were secretaries. Some were lawyers. Quite a few were actresses or models. Others were teachers, publishers, accountants or businessmen.

There were also dumb ones, but not that many. Most of these women were college-educated professionals. Some were black, some white, Hispanic or Asian. Some of these women were very open about what they were doing and others were more discreet. Some even bragged about all the players they had slept with. For others, this was all part of a very secret life.

He also wrote about how easy it was to face those encounters. Understandably, he desired a star for his fame and achievements. And to Johnson, that wish meant everything.

Magic wrote: “Usually the women waiting for us in hotel lobbies pretended to be interested in autographs. But you can sign that autograph and write her room number next to her signature. Or you can write her name and whisper, “Call me” or “See you in an hour.”

Without question, Johnson’s promiscuity was his undoing. But the unending hatred of the scrutiny he received was unwarranted. Do you agree?
