Sui Southern Gas Company and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines have fixed three daily cooking windows for household gas this winter. In total, homes will get eight hours of scheduled supply a day. Therefore, homes will have 16 hours without regular supply.
The change matters because millions of households must now plan cooking around fixed windows, as winter demand rises and liquefied natural gas availability tightens.
SSGC winter schedule
Sui Southern Gas Company, which serves Sindh and Balochistan, announced its schedule on Wednesday, November 4. Furthermore, it acted in line with federal government directives. Also, it said it would prioritise domestic consumers during cooking hours.
| Meal | Gas supply window | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | 6:30am to 9:00am | 2.5 hours |
| Lunch | 12:00pm to 2:30pm | 2.5 hours |
| Dinner | 6:00pm to 9:00pm | 3 hours |
| Total | Three windows | 8 hours |
An SSGC spokesperson told Dawn that the schedule covers domestic consumers in Sindh and Balochistan. In addition, it came into effect immediately. The timings appear on the company’s website and social media pages.
Sui Northern Gas Pipelines has introduced the same three windows for domestic consumers in Islamabad, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Geo News reported, citing The News, and has also cut gas supply to the compressed natural gas sector from 50 million cubic feet a day to 35 million cubic feet a day, with plans to suspend it altogether in the coming days.
The announcement followed a severe gas crisis in Karachi on Tuesday, when several neighbourhoods reported low pressure or no gas, while contradictory schedules attributed to SSGC circulated on social media from Monday until the utility issued a clear consolidated statement late on Tuesday evening, according to Dawn.
For the past some years, SSGC consumers have not received round-the-clock gas supply, Dawn reported, and the winter schedule formalises cooking-hour supply rather than restoring uninterrupted service.
The utilities have confirmed the three-window schedule and its immediate effect. However, the utilities have not announced an end date. It also remains unclear whether every locality will maintain full pressure during each window.
