Democrat Gina Hinojosa Texas governor race winner defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott.

The Associated Press called the race on Tuesday night. Hinojosa led Abbott 57 percent to 41 percent at the call.

Hinojosa becomes Texas’ first Latina governor. She is the first Democrat to hold the office since Ann Richards left it in 1995.

Hinojosa is 52 and a five-term state representative from Austin. She is a labor lawyer, born in McAllen and raised in Brownsville.

Abbott called Hinojosa to concede at about 10 p.m. He sought a record fourth term and held the office since January 2015.

The campaign centered on public education and household costs. Hinojosa takes office in January 2027.

The win pairs with James Talarico’s Senate victory in Texas. Democrats swept both statewide races in Texas on the same night.

What is confirmed: Hinojosa won the governor’s race. Abbott conceded. She becomes the third woman to hold the office, after Richards and Miriam A. Ferguson.
