Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won the Michigan Senate race. He defeated Republican former Representative Mike Rogers.

The Associated Press called the race at 2:27 a.m. Eastern Time. El-Sayed led Rogers 52 percent to 46 percent at the call.

El-Sayed becomes the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate. He succeeds retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters.

El-Sayed is a 42-year-old doctor and former public health official. He is the son of Egyptian immigrants.

He declared victory early Wednesday at the Michigan Democrats’ headquarters in Detroit. He campaigned on universal healthcare and government accountability.

Rogers lost his second consecutive Senate race. He narrowly lost to Democrat Elissa Slotkin in 2024.

The win helped deliver the Senate majority to Democrats. Democrats have held the Michigan seat since 1979.

What is confirmed: El-Sayed won the seat. The Senate majority already went to Democrats. El-Sayed takes office with the new Congress in January.
