England are jealous of India
Nottingham, Jul 31 (IANS): The Decision Review System (DRS) has generated so much heat in the ongoing India-England series that former cricketers Ravi Shastri and Nasser Hussain were engaged in a war-of-words on air over its use Sunday.
India’s controversial association with Trent Bridge continues. In 2007, it was S Sreesanth’s beamer to Kevin Pietersen and his run-in with England skipper Michael Vaughan that got him in trouble with the match referee.
Then came biggest controversy of the Test — jelly beans sprayed when Zaheer Khan, the eventual hero with the ball, came into bat.
Yesterday, two of the three controversies (the last one being the Ian Bell dismissal at tea) did not involve any of the 22 players, but former captains in the commentary box.
Michael Vaughan, England’s Ashes-winning captain set the ball rolling as it were with his tweet on Saturday: “Has Vaseline on the outside edge saved the day for Laxman???”
Probably, Vaughan did not realise what he had done. A former India captain here said: “He may feel it was done in a lighter note, but to me, he was casting aspersions.
”
Cricket pundits and enthusiasts here felt Vaughan committed a double murder — accusing a player from a visiting company of applying vaseline on his bat so that Hot Spot does not show a nick and secondly choosing to accuse a player like Laxman, who has a spotless record in his 15-year international career.
Vaughan didn’t feel it was a big deal because a lot of players do it. “I’m sure he has done it during his playing days,” said a former India captain.
Asked whether the BCCI should step in and question Vaughan, he said: “They could.”
Another India stalwart said, “He (Vaughan) tweeted that and he got what he wanted… attention.”
Before the luncheon interval, the media learnt about an argument between Ravi Shastri and Nasser Hussain.
The former England captain has always felt that the Decision Review System should have been used in this series while Shastri feels BCCI has good reason to doubt it.
Shastri emphasised that there is a lot of floating around in the newspapers and people cannot stomach the fact the India are the No 1 Test team in the world and that the BCCI can organise such a great product like the Indian Premier League. Hussain responded by saying he is within his rights to express his opinion.
