Polling to elect Supreme Court Bar Association President ends, counting begins

ISLAMABAD (october 29, 2011): About 2240 members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) cast their votes in the annual SCBA election today (Saturday). The polling started at 9 am and would continue till 5 pm.

Polling for Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has come to an end, and according to preliminary results Yasin Azad has taken the lead.

Around 2,255 members of the bar association casted their votes to elect a new body for the year 2011-2012.

As per preliminary results, the votes bagged by Azad and his opponent Justice (retd) Rasheed A Rizvi are as follows:

Lahore

Azad: 450 votes, Rizvi: 420 votes

Quetta

Azad: 59 votes, Rizvi: 32 votes

Multan

Azad: 57 votes, Rizvi: 50 votes

Hyderabad

Azad: 20 votes, Rizvi: Two votes

Abbottabad

Azad: 13 votes, Rizvi: 23 votes

Peshawar

Azad: 68 votes, Rizvi: 45 votes

Bhawalpur

Azad: 18 votes, Rizvi: 33 votes

Result for Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi are yet to be disclosed.

Polling stations were set up in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Lahore, Bahawalpur, Multan, Hyderabad, Karachi, Quetta, Abbottabad and Peshawar.

As reported earlier, pundits gave Rizvi an edge over Azad. Rizvi is a former judge of the Sindh High Court and was twice elected president of the Sindh High Court Bar Association

Fifty per cent of the voters are from Lahore, so the presidential candidates had focused their campaign on the city.

Rizvi was fielded by Hamid Khan’s Professional Group which was prominent during the lawyers’ movement. Azad had the support of PPP lawyers as well as incumbent president Asma Jahangir.

Rizvi’s camp claimed that his opponent had the support of the government.

Proof of this, they say, is the prime minister’s announcement to build a hospital for the lawyers and the Punjab governor’s grants to Lahore bars.

Azad’s supporters had countered that the entire ‘judiciary’ was busy canvassing for Rizvi. They allege that the Chief Justice of Pakistan addressed the lawyers function arranged by the Lahore High Court Bar Association, led by Asghar Ali Gill to show his support. Azad’s group claimed that the event was a campaign event for Rizvi.
