Democrat Josh Turek won the Iowa Senate race. He defeated Republican Representative Ashley Hinson.
Decision Desk HQ and NBC News projected the win. The race tested Hinson’s ties to President Donald Trump.
Trump won Iowa by 13 points in 2024. Turek still won the state. His win gave Democrats another flipped Senate seat.
A Paralympic champion’s campaign
Turek is a two-time Paralympic gold medalist in wheelchair basketball. He won a heated primary against state Senator Zach Wahls.
He then turned to the general election. He attacked Hinson over her husband’s stock portfolio. He also raised the Epstein files.
Hinson served three terms in Congress. Her campaign tied her closely to Trump. Voters chose Turek instead.
Turek becomes the state’s first Democrat in the Senate in a decade. Senator Tom Harkin left the chamber in 2015.
What is confirmed: Turek won the seat. The Senate majority already went to Democrats. Turek takes office with the new Congress in January.
