Democrats swept three of Iowa’s four House seats in the midterm elections. The Iowa House seats Democrats sweep left Republicans with only one seat in a state that entered Election Day with an all-Republican congressional delegation.
The Iowa victories helped secure the House majority for Democrats. Christina Bohannan, Lindsay James and Sarah Trone Garriott each won their races.
Iowa’s 1st District
Christina Bohannan defeated U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in a rematch from 2024. Bohannan earned 53.6% of the vote over Miller-Meeks with 42.8%.
Bohannan won on her third attempt after losing by fewer than 800 votes in 2024. Decision Desk HQ projected her win at 10:17 p.m. on election night.
Iowa’s 2nd District— Iowa House seats Democrats sweep
Democrat Lindsay James defeated Republican Joe Mitchell in the race for U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson’s seat. Hinson ran for the Senate instead of seeking re-election to the House.
James earned 49.5% of votes over Mitchell with 45.6%. Decision Desk HQ projected her win at 10:33 p.m.
Iowa’s 3rd District
Democratic candidate Sarah Trone Garriott overcame U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn. Trone Garriott won 54.6% of the vote over Nunn with 45.4%.
What is confirmed: Democrats won three of Iowa’s four House seats. Republican Chris McGowan won the fourth district, sending him to Congress for the first time. A delegation previously composed entirely of Republicans will now send three Democrats and one Republican to Washington.
