Balochistan LG polls: Unofficial results show independents lead over 1100 seats

QUETTA: Independent candidates led the local government (LG) elections held on Sunday in 32 districts of Baluchistan after a nine-year period.

According to unofficial and unconfirmed results, independent candidates have won more than 1,145 seats in municipal corporations, municipal committees and trade union councils, followed by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) who won around 130 seats and the ruling party Balochistan Awami (BAP). ) securing 72 seats.

The Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party won 65 seats, the National Party 38, the Pakistan People’s Party 35 and the Balochistan-Mengal National Party (BNP-M) 20, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) 10 and the Muslim League of Pakistan Nawaz (PML-N) was leading in six seats.

On Twitter, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the local government election in Baluchistan has strengthened democracy.

The prime minister praised the role of law enforcement agencies in keeping the peace during the elections.

Voting for local government elections in all 4,456 urban and rural districts of Balochistan’s 32 districts ended at 5pm amid reports of sporadic violence.

However, 1,584 candidates were already elected unopposed to general seats and the election was held in the remaining 4,456 constituencies.

3,552,398 voters were registered for LG Surveyswhile 5,226 polling stations, including 576 for men and 562 for women, were established for Baluchistan’s LG votes.
