Kapp’s 150 rescues South Africa after early collapse against England

TAUNTON: South Africa’s star all-rounder Marizanne Kapp put on a dazzling show with the bat as her resounding 150-run slam rescued the touring team after an early collapse in the Single Test against England.

In the unique test between the two sides, the hosts’ captain Heather Knight invited the Proteas women to bat first after the coin was tossed in their favour.

Batting first, the tour team suffered early disaster as they lost all four of their wickets by just 48 runs when the English pacers wreaked havoc on their top order.

Following the initial disaster, South African all-around star Kapp defended his team and played a vital strike to rescue his team from a paltry total.

The right-handed batsman stood her ground and kept the scoreboard going, while skipper Sune Luus and Anneke Bosch contributed significant contributions; scoring 27 and 30 respectively.

Kapp continued to dominate the English bowling attack and formed vital partnerships with the Thainders, who returned after scoring cheaply.

Following Kapp’s surprising blow, South Africa rescued 48-4 to 284 at the end of the first day’s game. He scored a superb 150 out of 213 deliveries, laced with 26 limits.

For England, Kate Cross led the way with four wickets, while Lauren Bell claimed two. Issy Wong, Nat Sciver, Sophie Ecclestone and Alice Davidson-Richards each struck out one batter.

The home team will now resume their innings at 0/0 in response to South Africa’s 284.
