Sunderland beat Chelsea 1-0 at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, and one penalty kick made all the difference. Enzo Le Fee scored from the spot in the 36th minute, and the home side held on for a win that moves them off the bottom of the Premier League table.

It was Sunderland’s second league win of the season and their first since 30 August. For Chelsea, it was a fourth defeat in 10 league games under Xabi Alonso, and it drops them out of the top four heading into the international break.

Brobbey Wins Decisive Penalty

Brian Brobbey was the man who made the goal happen. He had already warned Chelsea early on, volleying wide from a fine Chemsdine Talbi cross, and he kept causing problems every time the ball came near him.

In the 36th minute, Brobbey raced away from Levi Colwill inside the box. Colwill pulled him back just as he was about to shoot, and referee Jarred Gillett pointed to the spot. Le Fee stepped up and sent goalkeeper Mike Penders the wrong way to put Sunderland ahead.

Colwill was booked for the foul and did not come back for the second half. Chelsea moved Moises Caicedo into centre-back and brought on Estevao, but the change did not fix their problems at the back.

Palmer Appeal Turned Down

Chelsea felt hard done by over a penalty call of their own. Cole Palmer skipped past a challenge and went down after a sliding tackle from Luke O’Nien right on the edge of the box. It looked like a foul, and VAR checked whether the contact was inside the area.

The check went against Chelsea. VAR ruled that the contact happened outside the box, so play went on with no penalty. It was a close call, and it left Chelsea’s players and fans frustrated.

Chelsea’s best chance of the first half came soon after, when Morgan Rogers met a fine cross with a free header from eight yards out — and somehow put it wide. At half-time, the numbers told the story of Sunderland’s dominance: expected goals 1.71 to 0.19 in their favour, 10 touches in Chelsea’s box to 3, and 74 sprints to Chelsea’s 57, even though Chelsea had 68 percent of the ball.

Why Win Matters for Sunderland

This win means a lot to Sunderland. They came into the game bottom of the table, with just one point from their previous six league matches, and manager Regis Le Bris under real pressure. They had also lost to Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League on Thursday, so confidence was low.

The win changes the picture. Sunderland now have eight points and sit 18th, just one point from safety. The fans were delighted at the final whistle, and Le Bris urged his players to stick to the identity that won them so many games last season, when they came up to the Premier League and surprised everyone.

It was a bad day for Chelsea for a different reason. They have now lost two of their last three league games and failed to score in two of them, against Spurs and Sunderland. They were missing Joao Pedro in attack and had key defenders out injured, but the lack of energy and cutting edge will worry Alonso most.

What Happens Next

Both sides now head into the international break. After it, Sunderland travel to Aston Villa, while Chelsea look to bounce back at home to Leeds. Sunderland will hope this win is the start of a climb up the table; Chelsea need to find their scoring touch again, fast.
