Democrat Amy Klobuchar won the Minnesota governor’s race. She defeated Republican Lisa Demuth.

The Associated Press called the race late Tuesday. Klobuchar won 55.5 percent to 42.6 percent.

Klobuchar becomes the first woman elected governor of Minnesota. The race was the first all-woman major-party contest for the office in state history.

Minnesota’s first woman governor

Klobuchar is 66 and a US senator. She was the first woman to represent Minnesota in the Senate in 2006.

Demuth was the state House speaker. She won the Republican primary with 43.6 percent of the vote.

Klobuchar succeeds Governor Tim Walz, who ended his bid for a third term. The office stays in Democratic hands for a fifth consecutive term.

Klobuchar will have to step down from the US Senate by the time she takes office as governor. Her running mate Ben Schierer was elected lieutenant governor.

What is confirmed: Klobuchar won the race. Demuth lost. Minnesota has its first woman governor.
