Barcelona beat Aston Villa 3-0 in the Champions League at Spotify Camp Nou on Tuesday, with Lamine Yamal opening the scoring and Raphinha adding two second-half goals to end Villa’s perfect start to the league phase.
Yamal’s goal carried the night’s lasting significance, because it moved the 19-year-old past Kylian Mbappe as the highest-scoring teenager in Champions League history.
Yamal struck in the seventh minute after intercepting a misplaced pass from Joao Gomes inside the penalty area, according to TNT Sports’ live coverage. He took a touch, shaped to shoot and curled a low effort past goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into the far corner.
Raphinha doubled the lead in the 53rd minute after Fermin Lopez found him inside the area, with his shot taking a deflection before finding the net, TNT Sports reported. He completed the scoring in the 64th minute, turning home a low cross from Joao Cancelo from close range, according to Sports Mole’s match report.
Yamal’s goal was his 14th in the Champions League as a teenager, passing the previous record of 13 held by Mbappe, TNT Sports reported. Yamal reached 14 goals in 37 appearances in the competition, while Mbappe scored his 13 teenage goals in 23 matches, according to Yardbarker’s report on the record.
Raphinha also reached a personal landmark, with his two goals taking him to 23 Champions League goals for Barcelona, level with Robert Lewandowski and behind only Lionel Messi on 120 and Luis Suarez on 25, according to Opta figures cited by Sports Mole.
| Scorer | Minute | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Lamine Yamal | 7 | Barcelona 1-0 Aston Villa |
| Raphinha | 53 | Barcelona 2-0 Aston Villa |
| Raphinha | 64 | Barcelona 3-0 Aston Villa |
Barcelona controlled the match after the early goal, finishing with 65 percent possession and 16 shots to Villa’s nine, including eight on target to Villa’s one, Sports Mole reported. Villa still found space behind Barcelona’s defence at times, but lacked quality at the decisive moment, according to Sports Mole’s verdict on the match.
Villa had won all three of their opening league-phase matches before Tuesday, while Barcelona had won two and lost one. Victory lifted Barcelona to second in the league-phase standings and dropped Villa to third, with Villa suffering their first defeat of the campaign, Sports Mole reported.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain set a Champions League record with four goals in 16 minutes at Villarreal.
Barcelona and Aston Villa both return to league action on Sunday, with Barcelona travelling to Atletico Madrid in La Liga and Villa visiting Manchester United in the Premier League, according to Sports Mole.
