Manchester United scored twice in stoppage time to rescue a 4-4 draw with Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, in a Premier League match that kept swinging from one side to the other until the very last kick.
United went two goals down inside four minutes, fought back to 2-2 by half-time, then fell 4-2 behind early in the second half. Just when defeat looked certain, substitutes Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu struck in added time to save a point.
The result leaves United with one win from 10 league games this season. They started the day in 19th place, with seven points, and the pressure on head coach Michael Carrick grows with every dropped point. Villa, unbeaten in five league games before kick-off, stay unbeaten — but they will feel this as two points lost.
Villa Strike Twice in Four Minutes
Villa needed less than a minute to open the scoring. Alysson drove a shot through the legs of United goalkeeper Senne Lammens from the first attack of the game. Three minutes later it was 2-0: Lammens could not hold Alysson’s next effort, and Nicolas Jackson was on hand to score. At three minutes and 42 seconds, it was the earliest United had ever trailed by two goals in a Premier League match. Boos rang around Old Trafford, and Villa looked ready to add more.
United Level Before Break
But the home side found a way back. Boubacar Kamara brought down Matheus Cunha inside the box, and Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot in the 16th minute. Then, a minute before half-time, Youri Tielemans fired home against his old club after Noussair Mazraoui cut the ball back. It was 2-2 at the break.
It was the second time in a week United had come back from 2-0 down. On Tuesday they had done the same against Roma in the Champions League and gone on to win 3-2.
Villa Restore Two-Goal Lead
United’s second half started as badly as the first. Diogo Dalot fouled Alysson inside the box two minutes after the restart, and John McGinn scored the penalty to put Villa ahead again. Five minutes later Leon Goretzka made it 4-2, poking home from close range after Leny Yoro headed a McGinn free kick against his own crossbar and the ball dropped loose in a crowded box. It was Goretzka’s first goal for Villa, and Jackson — who had tried to finish the chance himself — could only watch as his team-mate did the job.
Why Draw Matters for United
A draw means one point for each team, and for United this point matters a lot. They are stuck near the bottom of the table, with only one win from 10 games and eight league games now without a win. Every point helps them climb away from the relegation places — the bottom three spots that send teams down a division at the end of the season. United had 25 shots to Villa’s 8, with 9 on target to Villa’s 6, and won 8 corners to 1.
Stoppage time is the extra time added at the end of each half for delays such as injuries and substitutions. United used those extra minutes well: Zirkzee turned in a Dorgu cross in the 92nd minute, then Dorgu himself headed in a Fernandes cross in the 96th minute. The two substitutes, brought on in the 67th minute, changed the game.
For Villa, the draw keeps their unbeaten league run going — now six games — but a win slipped away in seconds. They were 12th before kick-off and a win would have lifted them to eighth. United now have the international break to regroup. Their next league game is away to Liverpool on Sunday, 22 November — one of the biggest fixtures of their season.
