Democrat Peggy Flanagan won the Minnesota Senate race. She defeated Republican Michele Tafoya.

The Associated Press called the race early Wednesday. Flanagan led 54 percent to 43 percent.

Flanagan becomes the first Native American woman elected to the US Senate. She is Ojibwe and belongs to the White Earth Nation.

A historic first for the Senate

Flanagan is 47 and Minnesota’s lieutenant governor. She held the post since January 2019.

Tafoya was a former NFL sideline reporter. She ran to replace Senator Tina Smith, who did not seek another term.

The win keeps the seat in Democratic hands. Minnesota has not elected a Republican to the US Senate since 2002.

Flanagan takes office on January 3, 2027. Smith keeps the seat until then.

What is confirmed: Flanagan won the race. Tafoya lost. She becomes the first Native American woman elected to the Senate.
