Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville won the Alabama governor’s race. He defeated Democrat Doug Jones.

The Associated Press called the race for Tuberville. He took 52.1 percent of the vote to Jones’s 47.9 percent.

The win keeps the governor’s office in Republican hands. Democrats have not won an Alabama governor’s race since 1998.

Tuberville beats Jones again in Alabama rematch

Tuberville is Alabama’s senior US senator and a former Auburn head football coach. He gave up his Senate seat to run for governor.

The race was a rematch of the 2020 Senate contest. Tuberville beat Jones then by 60.1 percent to 39.7 percent.

This time the margin was far narrower. It was the narrowest for a Republican governor nominee since 2002.

Tuberville succeeds Governor Kay Ivey. She could not run again, and he takes office in January.

What is confirmed: Tuberville won the governor’s race. Jones lost the rematch. Tuberville declared victory on Tuesday night.
