Margaret Qualley and Jack Antonoff have filed for divorce, ending a marriage that lasted just over three years, according to court records reported by USA Today and Page Six.
Qualley, 32, and Antonoff jointly filed for divorce on Friday, October 30, in the Kings County Supreme Court in Brooklyn, New York, according to New York Supreme Court records obtained by both outlets.
Qualley is listed as the plaintiff and Antonoff as the defendant in an uncontested matrimonial action, court records show, a listing that reflects how New York requires one party to be named plaintiff and the other defendant even when a couple files jointly.
Page Six reported that the couple have also filed a settlement agreement, which is still being processed by the court.
Filing matters because it turns months of public speculation into a formal legal step, while leaving the final terms of the split to a court process that has not yet finished.
Neither Qualley nor Antonoff has publicly commented on the filing itself, according to reports, and Page Six said it had reached out to their representatives for comment.
Separation became public in July
News of the couple’s separation broke on July 8, when People and Page Six reported that Qualley and Antonoff had decided to separate after nearly three years of marriage.
Two days later, Qualley’s representative issued a statement denying the stories circulating about the marriage, saying there were no trust issues and no infidelity in the relationship.
“They have deep love and care for one another,” the representative said at the time. “There are only two people in this marriage, and the sources who are talking to the press and commenting on their relationship are not people who know them. Please respect their privacy.”
Speculation had grown after Antonoff attended the wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce without Qualley, prompting reports that he had told fellow guests the couple were in a “tiff” and that he did not want to put up a facade while they were having trouble.
A source told Page Six that the divorce filing was inevitable and that the couple had taken time to adjust to the new chapter before making it official.
“This divorce filing was inevitable,” the source said. “Like most couples, it took Margaret and Jack some time to iron out a few things and just adjust to this chapter before taking that next step to make things official and file the paperwork.”
“They still have immense respect for one another but knew this was coming,” the source added.
Another source told Page Six that there was no dramatic reason for the split, dispelling social media rumours about infidelity, and said the couple were figuring things out together.
“They’re figuring this all out together,” that source said. “For what it’s worth, they’ve had a beautiful and loving relationship. Sometimes, these things just don’t work.”
Page Six also reported that communication had been a challenge for the pair, with a source saying Antonoff could be particular about how he liked things done, while Qualley did not always feel her perspective was given the same weight.
Us Weekly subsequently reported that Qualley had initiated the breakup, citing busy schedules and distance as factors, and said the couple had still been trying to work on the marriage a few months earlier.
“They were still trying to work on the marriage a few months ago, but it ultimately wasn’t working,” Us Weekly reported. “At some point, the rose-colored glasses came off for Margaret, and she felt she needed to take a step back.”
At a concert in West Hollywood, California, on September 15, Antonoff alluded to the separation when a fan suggested his band Bleachers play “Let’s Get Married.”
“Absolutely not. Read the news, brother,” Antonoff replied, according to video captured by USA Today, before softening his tone and adding: “I love that song. I wrote it, like, 11 years ago.”
Page Six reported this week that Antonoff had said performing songs about Qualley remained a “really beautiful” experience despite their split.
A relationship that began in 2021
Qualley and Antonoff met in the summer of 2021 at a party, according to USA Today, and were later seen together on a date in Brooklyn.
Antonoff later described meeting her as a moment that changed what he imagined for his life, telling “The Howard Stern Show” that he began imagining things he had never imagined before, including marriage.
News broke in May 2022 that Antonoff had proposed, and he later said he had proposed in Paris after calling Qualley’s sister, Rainey Qualley, first.
Qualley and Antonoff married on August 19, 2023, at a ceremony in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, New Jersey, USA Today reported.
Guests at the wedding included Antonoff’s longtime collaborators Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey, according to USA Today.
Del Rey had earlier released a love song titled “Margaret” in 2023, in which Antonoff’s feelings for Qualley were set to music, and Qualley had described Antonoff as her “person” in an interview before the ceremony.
“It’s real. It’s amazing,” Qualley said at the time. “It’s the best feeling in the world. I’m so excited and so at ease all at once.”
Qualley, the daughter of actress Andie MacDowell, is known for films including “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Substance,” and for the series “Maid.”
Antonoff is the frontman of the band Bleachers and a Grammy-winning producer known for his work with Swift and Del Rey.
In a February interview with Vanity Fair, Qualley confirmed that she and Antonoff had planned to have children, while declining to discuss any names they might have chosen.
Back to work in London
A day after news of the filing became public, Qualley was spotted in London with actor Tom Holland, where the two are preparing for a film about dancer Fred Astaire, according to Geo News.
Qualley is set to play Adele Astaire in the biopic, with Holland playing Fred Astaire, and Sabrina Carpenter and Talia Ryder also in the cast, Geo News reported.
Fans reacting to the sighting online welcomed the project, with several commenting on the start of rehearsals for the film.
What is confirmed so far is the filing itself, the uncontested listing, and the settlement agreement now before the court.
What is not confirmed is when the court will complete its processing of that agreement, or what its terms contain, since details of the settlement have not been made public.
For now, the legal process will decide when the divorce becomes final, while both Qualley and Antonoff return to work that had continued through the months since their separation became public.
