ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster and Management Authority (NDMA) will not be handed control of the Polio Monitoring Cell.
The meeting of the anti-polio steering committee chaired by State Minister for National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination, Saira Afzal Tarar made the decision. The committee stated that eradication of polio was not the NDMA’s mandate nor was it equipped to tackle it.
A recently released report by the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative termed Pakistan’s efforts to eradicate polio a disaster and recommended that the charge of eliminating the virus be handed over to the NDMA.
Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan are the only three countries where the crippling virus still exists.
