The iPhone is changing. For months we have know Apple AAPL +0.53% plans to shake up the design of its famous phones, but now a consistent picture is emerging of just how ambitious the company’s plans are…
A pair of new leaks have shed light on what many people are calling the ‘iPhone 8’ (though I think it will have a different name) and while there are minor differences between them, the vision is clear.
First up is Benjamin Geskin, who regularly works with me on the creation of renders and illustrations. Geskin has attained new schematics which build on leaked images last week showing an iPhone with a minimal yet consistent 4mm bezel, and he has created a render based on it:
The most striking part of the leak is the claim that not only will Apple integrate the fingerprint sensor under the iPhone 8’s display, but that it will also do the same for the front facing camera and proximity sensors at the top of the phone. If correct, this would be a truly radical step forward.
Interestingly this is independently backed up by /Leaks and iFanr which obtained virtually identical schematics (with fractionally different dimensions):
Geskin says his source claims this model has already entered limited production for testing. The flipside is Apple is believed to be readying multiple iPhone 8 models with a less ambitious plan B in case all the new tech in this version is not ready for mass production in time.
As with all leaks caution should be shown until Tim Cook is standing on stage with the phone in his hand, but a very exciting pattern is emerging. Especially as famed Apple leak specialist Ming-Chi Kuo previously detailed a ‘function area’ for the iPhone 8 (akin to the new MacBook Pro Touch Bar) which requires the removal of the physical home button and bottom bezel.
From a practical perspective creating a handset with a consistent 4mm bezel all the way round could also make for a more durable phone when dropped, especially when compared to the vulnerable bezel free sides on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus.
Needless to say, but with plenty of time still to go before the iPhone 8’s release a lot can change. Especially when external changes are just the tip of the iceberg…
