Shiah-Sunni Riots in Multan, Army deployed

Business activities are partially restored in the tension-hit cities Rawalpindi and Multan after sectarian riots.

According to reports, transport, markets and shops are still closed in Abbottabad and Haripur while normalcy has returned to Bahawalnagar and Haroonabad.

Security has been beefed up and heavy contingents of police are deployed in the violence-hit areas to avoid further unwanted incidents.

Yesterday, army troops were called to maintain peace in Multan after a man was killed and two others injured in a clash between two rival groups.

Authorities relaxed curfew in parts of Rawalpindi from 9pm till 1am as government appealed to Ulema to help defuse the prevailing tension. The curfew was clamped after sectarian clashes killed at least 10 people on the day of Ashura.

Political leaders and civil society condemned the incidents and called for action against the elements involved in sectarian attacks.
